How To Write a Caption and Why Captions are Important

In early February, I learned about the implementation and importance  of  captions. Captions are used to provide context for a picture by answering 5 questions: who, what, where, when, and why/how. There are two types of captions: basic captions, and expanded captions.

Basic captions are often 1 sentence, identifying up to 5 people in he photo, and usually being used when there is limited space. A  basic caption will include an action lead-in and basic information. Below is an example of a basic caption that I completed for an assignment.

Extended captions include an action lead-in, basic information, and complementary information. These captions go more in depth on what is going on in the photo, providing context as to what led up to what is happening and what may happen afterwards. Below is an example of an extended caption, using the same exact image as in the basic caption assignment.
